Everything Sucks! is set in 1996 at Boring High School in Oregon and follows two groups of teenagers. Luke O'Neil, along with his friends McQuaid and Tyler, are freshmen at Boring and are considered social outcasts. They join the A/V Club on their first day of high school and Luke develops a crush on Kate Messner, the principal's daughter, and a sophomore at Boring. Following a performance in the cafeteria promoting the school play, Kate begins to question her sexuality when theater student Emaline Addario catches her attention. Kate begins dating Luke when rumors of her being gay circulate the school. When the school play is canceled due to set destruction, Luke and his friends offer that the AV Club and Drama Club collaborate on a film that would be broadcasted to the entire school. Meanwhile, Luke is dealing with the discovery of VHS tapes recorded by his father before abandoning him and his mother. Following a discussion regarding Luke in the principal's office, Luke's mother, Sherry, grows close to Ken, Kate's father, and the principal of Boring.
