Mixed-ish serves as the prequel to its predecessors and details the early years of Rainbow Johnson as she recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s and the dilemmas they faced over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves when her parents move from a hippie commune (that was raided) to the suburbs. Tracee Ellis Ross returns as Rainbow Johnson, this time in a narrator capacity and also serves as an executive producer alongside Anthony Anderson and Laurence Fishburne.
