It is named after and lightly based off of a real criminal gang in the late 19th and early 20th century who were named "Peaky Blinders" because they were known for stitching razor blades into the front of their flat caps which they would use weapons.

He is working to bring the family name from one of crooks to one of respect. The Shelby family leads the Peaky Blinders, and all of the men in the family were previously in WW1. Flashbacks to the war show it has had a lasting impact on their character. Special police and investigators are sent to Birmingham in hopes of stopping the Peaky Blinders in their illegal activities. This is where the show begins.
