In the show The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, two friends Kiyo and Sumire move to Kyoto to become maikos. (apprentice geishas). While studying to be a maiko Kiyo finds out that she does not share the same passion or talent as Sumire to become a maiko and is forced with the hard decision of moving away or becoming a Makanai (a cook) for the geisha house. Kiyo decides to become the Makanai which leads to both Kiyo and Sumire discovering their own passions and interests in different ways while trying to maintain their friendship in the same house. This show is focused on friendship and the problems an unexpected situation can cause for two friends. The show's casual storytelling and realistic situations lead to an enjoyable binge-worthy show.
